Non fiction writing

In St Austin’s we have developed our own teaching guides for Non-fiction writing. The teaching guides identify the key language features of non-fiction writing that must be taught in each year group from Early years to year 6. All staff use these teaching guides when teaching non-fiction writing. These guides ensure progression throughout the school and ensure that the children are suitably challenged to maximise their full writing potential.

Examples of some of these guides can be viewed below

Narrative Writing – Power of Reading

Throughout the school we use The Power of Reading to teach our narrative writing. Each unit of work is based around one core text and incorporates opportunities for the children to develop their comprehension skills as well as their narrative writing. Each unit lasts between 2-4 weeks and a piece of narrative writing is produced by the children at the end of the unit. This piece of writing allows the children to develop their creative writing skills as well as practising the Grammar and Punctuation skills that they will have been taught in their SPAG lessons.
