The Young Shakespeare Company
On Monday 11th November The Young Shakespeare Company performed 'Romeo and Juliet' for the children in Year 6.
The Young Shakespeare Company are a team of professional actors and storytellers who perform Shakespeare’s plays for young people in schools and theatres across the country.
ROMEO AND JULIET
Five Young Shakespeare Company actors performed Shakespeare’s heartbreaking story of ‘star-crossed love’ in a fast-moving fully-costumed interactive production. The play was brought vividly to life around and among the children, at times including the whole audience to create such dramatic scenes as the masked ball at which Romeo and Juliet meet and the street fight in which Mercutio and Tybalt are both killed.
Throughout the performance the children became actively involved in the play through a carefully structured range of drama and language activities. They were encouraged to explore the motives, thoughts and feelings of the characters, imagining, for example, how Juliet feels as she takes the sleeping potion from which she may never wake up. Volunteers from among the children were also chosen to become individual characters in the story and all the children have the opportunity to speak and enjoy Shakespeare’s words in short, accessible sections.
