Today we were delighted to welcome Christian Bundgaard and his partner , Karin , into our school .
Christian was born with a visual impairment and became totally blind when he was six . He
represented Denmark in four Paralympic games in Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and
Beijing 2008. He won the gold medal in the 100 metres breaststroke in Barcelona, the first Danish
winner of a gold medal.
He was presented his medal by Queen Sofia of Spain . In Atlanta he won a
gold and silver medal and he brought these in to show our children. Christian shared his journey with
our children and was truly inspirational in what he said. He emphasised the importance of the
support he got from his parents, the importance of hard work and focus , and ensuring that you
always did your best at school and why learning a language opens up so many opportunities . He
highlighted also why the value of ‘respect ‘was so important if we are to live in a more harmonious
world . Our children asked lots of really good questions about both how Christian coped with his
disability, the practicalities of swimming in a straight line when you can’t see, to more personal
questions about his likes and dislikes in life.
A huge thank you to Christian and Karin for coming in to our school. We wish them both the very
best in the future.
